History

Built in 1915, the hotel is a landmark in the district of the Casco Antiguo (also known as the Casco Viejo or the Old City). This rich historic district, which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, was built around 1673 by the Spanish Garrison, the Catholic Church, and other settlers. Currently, this entire historic area is undergoing a major effort to restore the architecture and the culture of the area to reflect its 17th century roots. The streets represent a Spanish Colonial style reminiscent of the days prior to the founding of the Republic of Panama. In its early history, Panama was part of the Grand Colombia area of Latin America. Since the establishment of the Republic, the Casco Viejo district has been recognized as the embodiment of the very fabric of the country’s history. Once restored to its former grandeur, Panama City’s Casco Viejo will number among such world-renowned cities as Old San Juan in Puerto Rico and Cartagena in Colombia.
